What is YouTube Advertising?

YouTube advertising, which is done through Google ads, is a way to promote your video content on YouTube or in search results so that you can reach more of your users. YouTube ads include online display ads that contain videos. It is generally accepted advertising that occurs before, during or after a video stream on the Internet.

Key Statistics of YouTube Advertising

  • 90% of people say they discover new brands and products on YouTube (Thinkwithgoogle).
  • Nearly half of marketers (48%) are investing in YouTube advertising and 62% plan to increase their YouTube ad spend (Hanapin).
  • In the US alone, YouTube made $4.96 billion in net advertising revenues in 2019 and is estimated to make $5.47 billion in 2020 (Statista).

Types of YouTube Ads

There are several different types of YouTube advertising formats:

  • Skippable In-Stream Ads
  • Non-Skippable In-Stream Ads
  • Video Discovery Ads
  • Bumper Ads
  • Masthead Ads
  • Shoppable Ads

If you are using a YouTube marketing strategy you should know about all these formats.

  1. Skippable In-Stream Ads:

If you are using Skippable in-stream video ads for promoting video content before, during or after other videos on YouTube and across websites that are Google video partners. They are available for these campaign goals:

  • Sales
  • Leads
  • Website traffic
  • Brand awareness and reach
  • Product and brand consideration
  1. Non-Skippable In-Stream Ads:

Non-skippable in-stream ads are promoting your content on YouTube and before, during or after other Google partners. This ad format shows viewers the option without a skip. This ad is 15 seconds long. They are available for brand awareness and campaign purposes.

  1. Video Discovery Ads:

Video discovery ads are used for promoting video content in place of discovery related YouTube videos, on the YouTube mobile homepage, or as part of YouTube search results. These ads show a thumbnail from your video along with some text. The size and appearance vary depending on where the ad appears. They’re available for the “product and brand consideration” campaign objective.

  1. Bumper Ads:

Bumper ads or 6-second ads that play before, during, or after another video. They are not skippable. This ad is showing up on YouTube videos and across websites and apps that are Google video partners.

  1. Masthead Ads:

Masthead ads are used to drive awareness for new products or services to reach a large audience during a short period. These ads are only available through Google sales on a reservation basis.

  1. Shoppable Ads:

YouTube announced a new direction in June 2020. To use this new ad format, you need to synchronize your Google Merchant Center feed with your video ads. Then, you can extend your ad call to action so you can show the products displayed in your ad.

How to Advertise on YouTube

You have thousands of ideas about YouTube ads around in your mind. Here we will outline 7 steps you need to take to bring those ideas to life as YouTube ads.

Step1– Upload Your Video Advertisement to YouTube:

When you start setting up advertising campaigns, it’s best to upload your marketing video to your YouTube account.

Then you will be taken to the upload window where you can select the file to upload.

Be sure to fill out all of the necessary information like the title, description, and tags.

Step2– Create a New Campaign in Google Ads

Once you’ve uploaded your video, you’re ready to set up your YouTube ad campaign.

First, you must go to your Google Advertising account.

Now you’re ready to check out how to sign up for an account.

Once you’ve logged in to your account, click “All Campaigns” on the left. Then click on the big blue icon “+” to create a new campaign.

This will take you to a window where you need to select the type of campaign. Currently, Google offers five options:

  • Search
  • Display
  • Shopping
  • Video
  • Universal App

Once you have clicked on “Video” you need to select a single target that is relevant to the important thing you want your campaign to achieve for your business.

Step3– Configure Your Campaign:

Now, you can start to Configure your Campaign.

  • Choose a Name:

This is for your internal use only, so choose the right name for your campaign.

When you run multiple campaigns in Google ads, it will help you easily identify the campaign.

  • Set Your Budget:

Choose an average amount you want to spend each day.

It’s best to start small first. This way you can test and optimize your advertising campaign to make sure you’re getting the most out of your investment.

  • Select Your Network:

This section allows you to select your network wherever you want your ads to appear.

Creating a video ad, there are three options available:

  1. YouTube Search Results
  2. YouTube Videos
  3. Video Partners on the Display Network
  • Select Your Bidding Strategy:

You should choose how to pay for your campaign. Google ads provide four options:

Maximum CPV(cost-per-view): This is based on the number of viewers and the interaction a video received.

Maximum CPM(cost-per-mille): You will be charged for every thousand impressions your ad receives.

Viewable CPM (cost per mille): You will only receive one thousand impressions when your ad is viewed. For example, if a user lands on the page and bounces off right away, you will not be charged.

Target CPA (cost per acquisition): Cost is based on actions taken by viewers, such as clicking on your ad.

Step4– Select the People You Want to Reach:

Be sure to give your ad group a descriptive name before selecting your audience. That way, you’ll be able to use the same audience selection for future advertising campaigns.

Choose your Demographic: This is the first place to target your audience.

Advertising allows you to specify who you want to reach through options such as their gender, age, and parental status.

Target Your Audience: In this section, Google ads will give you hundreds of options to find your perfect target market. This will be exploring them and being as specific as possible.

Step5– Select Where You Want Your Ads to Show

Next, you can choose the specific type of content on which you want your ads to appear.

Enter your Target Keywords: Enter or paste your target keywords into the box using one word or phrase per line.

Select Topics: Just choose a relevant title to show your ads on content on specific topics.

Step6– Select Your Marketing Video

Next, use the search bar to find your marketing video. Or, if you haven’t uploaded your video yet, click the link to upload it to YouTube.

Step7– Configure Your YouTube Ads Video Ad

Finally, you need to select your video format.

The ads will show you which options are available based on your campaign.

Then, be sure to include your URL, CTA and headline.

To finish, just click “Save & Continue” and then “Continue Campaign”.
