OpenAI was founded in 2015 in San Francisco as a joint initiative of Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Wojciech Zaremba, Ilya Sutskever, and John Schulman. The mission was simple but wildly ambitious — develop safe and open AI tools to empower (rather than eradicate) people.

The company’s ultimate goal is to create AI systems that can solve some of the world’s most pressing problems, such as climate change, poverty, and disease.

* In the summer of 2018, simply training OpenAI’s Dota 2 bots required renting 128,000 CPUs and 256 GPUs from Google for multiple weeks.

* Microsoft announced a new multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment with the artificial intelligence lab OpenAI. The investment is the third phase of the partnership, following Microsoft’s previous investments in 2019 and 2021.

* DALL-E: In 2020, OpenAI introduced DALL-E, a generative model capable of creating high-quality images from textual descriptions.

* In November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, a language model chatbot built on top of GPT-3

  • GPT-4 is a multimodal large language model created by OpenAI and the fourth in its GPT series. It was released on March 14, 2023.
